Gorilla Conservation Efforts: Legal Actions to Protect Endangered Primates

Gorilla conservation efforts are supported by a multifaceted approach that includes legal actions, international cooperation, and on-the-ground conservation strategies. The Gorilla Agreement, under the auspices of the Convention of Migratory Species (CMS), is a pivotal legal framework that obliges countries within the gorillas’ range to collaborate on combating the threats these primates face in the wild. It focuses on fostering government cooperation across ten countries to address critical issues such as poaching and habitat loss, which are significant threats to gorilla populations.

Organizations like the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund play crucial roles in gorilla conservation. WWF has been instrumental in establishing new protected areas and enhancing the management of existing ones. Their efforts, along with other conservation initiatives, have led to the population of mountain gorillas increasing in recent years, allowing for their reclassification from “Critically Endangered” to “Endangered”. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund focuses on daily protection measures, anti-poaching patrols, and community engagement, especially outside national parks where Grauer’s gorillas are found, to mitigate threats like poaching.

Additionally, the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) highlights the importance of recycling electronics to reduce demand for coltan, a mineral whose mining destroys gorilla habitats. PASA also emphasizes standing against great ape trafficking, which is supported by international agreements like CITES, aiming to prevent the capture, killing, or commercial trade of great apes.

A new action plan for Western Lowland Gorilla Conservation, devised through collaborative efforts among range states, NGOs, and conservation experts, aims to address poaching, disease, and habitat loss by implementing improved regulations, holistic land-use planning, and outreach programs. This plan utilizes survey data and modeling to identify priority conservation areas, ensuring targeted and effective conservation efforts.
